Intervention – Scene 2
Apr 20th, 2008 | By PlotDog | Category: Intervention, Serialized Screenplay The sound of a wooden match struck once, Nothing. Twice and
a spark flashes on the screen. Third time and a flame flares
in slow motion, giving a glimpse of the tip of a woman’s
cigarette.
The flame settles to a slow burn and the match tip trembles.
The cigarette is held by fingertips with blood red nails.
Richard’s shaking hand cups the flame. The steady tip of the
cigarette moves to the flame. The woman’s lips inhale. The
cigarette tip glows. She exhales smoke and words.
JANE
I prefer lighters to matches.
The match falls. The screen is black. The sound of a
lighter trying to ignite. Once, nothing; twice nothing;
third time, flame erupts. The dangerously beautiful face of
JANE LENHART emerges from the smoke. The flame brings the
bar into focus. Richard was right, she is too perfect.
INT. COLLEGE BAR — NIGHT
RICHARD JORDAN is dressed casually and in out of date
fashion. His glasses are bland. He looks like a college
professor. Jane is the most alluring and flawlessly dressed
woman there. Richard offers the lighter’s flame. Jane
coldly gazes at the flame. Richard notices the cigarette is
already burning.
RICHARD
My name is Richard, well, Rich.
JANE
Rich. Actually, I prefer Dick.
RICHARD/DICK
OK. Hi, my name is Dick.
JANE
Of course it is.
Jane evaluates him as she inhales.
DICK
Well, I, um .. guess it’s lit.
Dick turns and shuffles away. Jane waits until he is nearly
out of hearing. Carl offers Dick a beer toast to failure
from his new position, sitting next to the plain blonde.
Jane gestures with the burning cigarette.
JANE
You should just wait until this one
is done and light the next.
She crushes the cigarette out, picks up the whiskey straight
and drinks the remaining half glass. Jane runs her fingertip
around the glass rim. Dick misses the signal. Jane pulls
out another cigarette. Dick grabs the wood matches.
DICK
Here, let me get that.
Jane glares. He drops the matches like they are already on
fire. He takes out his lighter and it lights first try.
JANE
You can learn.
DICK
I have sisters.
JANE
They trained you well.
Dick looks toward Carl for support and sees Carl absently
flirting with the plain blonde freshman. The blonde giggles,
as Carl’s hand slides up under her skirt. Carl just shrugs.
JANE (CONT’D)
Dick, ignore your friend; you are
doing just fine.
DICK
Ok.
Jane runs her finger around the rim of her glass again. The
bartender approaches and Jane shakes her head no at him.
JANE
This is where you offer me a drink.
DICK
A drink?
JANE
Yes, thank you. I would love
another.
Dick glances to Carl again for guidance. Jane places her
fingers on Dick’s chin, turns his head to her.
JANE (CONT’D)
Dick, what is your friend’s name?
DICK
You mean Carl, over there?
JANE
Yes, Carl. Now Sweetie, do you
want me to go home with Mr. Carl
Overthere?
DICK
No.
JANE
I suggest you pay attention to what
I want and not to what Mr. Carl
guesses I might want. Do you
follow?
DICK
Yes.
JANE
Think of it this way, I will tell
you what makes me happy and you
ignore Carl Overthere. You do that
and you and I will do so very well.
Jane’s cigarette has burned down. She extracts another and
immediately Dick has the lighter out and burning.
JANE (CONT’D)
Good boy.
DICK
You’re worth learning about.
JANE
Dick, you have just earned a date.
Dick waves the bartender over.
DICK
The lady will have…
JANE
Jack, straight.
The drink arrives. Dick pays. Jane takes one solid swallow,
sets the glass down, takes one drag from her cigarette, drops
the cigarette into the drink, and smiles at Dick.
JANE (CONT’D)
Why don’t we leave Carl to the
little girls and we get to know
each other?
Jane walks away, Dick in tow. They pass Carl without Dick
giving him a second glance. Carl stops necking, offers a
quick worried look, shrugs and turns back to the blonde.

I have to skidaddle for now, but i like it so far! I’m sure i’ll see what direction you are going with this once i read on. Smart, witty banter. Yes.
I’m not a writer, so my opinion may not be as valuable as the real industry types. Have a feeling you are an undiscovered gem.
