INT. WEDDING RECEPTION DICK AND JANE — AFTERNOON
Guests mix and mingle. Dick follows Jane like a puppy. Jane
turns and whispers to Dick. He looks hurt and turns to the
bar. Jane steps into a back area and pulls a cell phone from
her purse and hits the speed dial.
JANE
Hello, Mother. It’s already over.
JANE’S MOTHER
Your father was subpoenaed
yesterday.
JANE
He’s just my step father and you
could have come anyway.
JANE’S MOTHER
It’s a federal investigation.
JANE
That will take years, this was my
wedding.
JANE’S MOTHER
It won’t be your last.
JANE
Dick’s got a lot of potential; he
wants to take care of me. He
stands up for me.
JANE’S MOTHER
Does he stand up to you?
(Beat) Jane says nothing and smolders.
JANE’S MOTHER (CONT’D)
Then he’s just a servant.
JANE
But he loves me.
JANE’S MOTHER
Love doesn’t suit women like us.
JANE
I still love you, Mother.
Jane snaps the phone shut, pastes on her party face and flows
back into the reception.
