Prologue to a Prologue

Jun 7th, 2008 | By PlotDog | Category: A Novel Approach, A Novel Approach - Process

Writer Boy had plotted his “best offense ever” against the evil nemesis Captain Attention Deficit Disorder aka the CADD… aka… Captain Disorder.

For years Captain Disorder had been having his way with Writer Boy’s novel aspirations.  Certainly the finishing of the Dead Play novel by Writer Boy had put the Captain in a nasty mood and a bit of a deep blue funk for months.  Writer Boy had won free reign over his productivity, rushing about submitting proposals for selling the novel, pushing the associated screen play and generally being gleeful about how things were going, until Writer Boy realized that Captain Disorder had an previously undisclosed but equally enviably powerful ally in the world wide cartel NO Publications, Enterprises (NOPE).

Everywhere Writer Boy turned to market his writing he was instantly confronted by NOPE.  In time, Writer Boy knew he was caught in the cesspool of waiting writers.  He had to take the initiative back.  After hours of planning and research (and a few very dark beers), Writer Boy realized the deck was stacked against him so that clearly NOPE was helping Captain Disorder was still having his way with Writer Boy; and the cheap bastard hadn’t even bought Writer Boy dinner.  The lack of dinner left Writer Boy with low blood sugar and more than a bit of an attitude.  Months had passed and no strategy had come light to overcome Captain ADD, it was time to seek help.

When faced with an intractable problem, one that required thoughtful and complex solutions, Writer Boy had found it best to go to people who understood the word intractable.  Writer Boy combed his mind, but it didn’t help, so he combed his hair, which made him look significantly better but did not provide much of a solution.  Having found himself tractable Writer Boy sucked up his pride, and emailed his is biggest supporter, Reader Girl.  She immediately went to work on the problem by approaching her cohort.  Reader Girl used words like “intractable and cohort” on a regular basis because Reader Girl was a PhD student , and everyone knows that Almost Docs (known as the Candidates) had to use those types of words.  Writer Boy’s wait was shorter than his hair, (which is indeed short but also devilishly handsome and a bit spiky in the upward way).  Reader Girl’s team brain stormed the great Blog solution.  Which, through a series of twists and turns that lead to… Dat Dat Da….

“the best offense ever”  (very dramatic don’t you think)…….

The PlotDog Press, a blog for writers, writing and the occasional marketing of Writer Boy’s words.

How, you may ask does this blog constitute an offense?  It is simple.  Writer Boy now has a group of people who expect him to produce.  Blog posts, comments, reviews and finally with this new goofy naked writing scheme, CHAPTERS to his next novel.

Even as I (Writer Boy) types, Captain Disorder wails in the corner, expressing despair and a wish that he had indeed bought Writer Boy some dinner somewhere earlier in the process.  It is well known that Writer Boy can be distracted by a great key lime pie.  But now, Captain Disorder dreads his own just deserts.  AND SO

We are off and running, or at least typing.  What an odd experience this is going to be, this naked writing of a novel in front of what I hope will be thousands of eyes.  As those of you who have been following along know, I have undertaken the unusual experiment of writing a novel in front of my readers.  I expect it has done before, but this time I am doing it, so it is a first for me.  I have gotten a lot of unusual responses that I didn’t expect, from “brave” to “OMG you are crazy”.  Oh well, not the first time I have been accused of that.  The point is that this is a new experience for me and as a writer, new experiences tend to lead to better stories.  I hope you agree.  So, off and typing, wish me luck, wish me eyes, wish me talent and all I am asking in return, is that you come back, peek in on the process, and perhaps drop a comment on your thoughts on the story.  This is your chance to give advice to someone who is at least going to listen, even when I don’t use it.  In the end even Writer Boy learns from others experience and mistakes, if this book sells, one of you will win, yes folks, a Dinner with Writer Boy.  See, I told you lessons could be learned.

Write on my friends.
