Intervention – Scene 18
Aug 28th, 2008 | By PlotDog | Category: Intervention, Serialized Screenplay
INT. COURTROOM — DAY
Dick and Carl, Jane and Decker, ADA Johnson and the Judge are
all arranged in the Judge’s office. The Judge is out of his
robe. The Judge surveys the players sternly.
JUDGE
Someone got me off the golf course.
No one seems to know what to say and the Judge fixes Decker
with a hostile, knowing, stare.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
Things aren’t going well for
someone and I bet it isn’t your
client, Mr. Decker.
GRIFFIN DECKER
I will take that as a compliment,
Your Honor.
JUDGE
Don’t.
CARL HUNTER
Excuse me, Your Honor; am I missing
something here?
JUDGE
You most certainly are, Mr. Hunter.
Don’t worry, you’re out of your
league on this one. So shut up and
I’ll be fair. Talk again and you
will just ruin more of my golf
game.
GRIFFIN DECKER
Your Honor…
The judge squares on Decker like an angry god.
JUDGE
Get this straight, counselor. I
know who got me here and why, but I
lack happiness about it. You don’t
want that unhappiness transferred
to your client. Are we clear?
GRIFFIN DECKER
Yes, your honor.
Dick and Jane exchange looks of worry.
The JUDGE scans police reports and papers.
JUDGE
Anything to say from the state?
ADA JOHNSON
Your honor, we have agreement from
all parties as to the facts and are
prepared to wrap this up right now.
JUDGE
Are we bothering with facts this
time? I think I have those from
the police reports. But let’s not
let that deter us from conclusion.
Counsel, what are you requesting?
ADA JOHNSON
Your honor, defendant, Richard
Jordan, admits to reckless driving
and the Defendant, Jane Lenhart
Jordan, admits to public
intoxication, the state is willing
to avoid the cost of a trial and
recommends suspended sentences and
probation for both parties.
JUDGE
Any objections from anyone here?
Dick and Carl just stare. Carl shakes his head no. Jane
smiles. The Judge takes one more look at the police report,
shakes his head and lays the paperwork down.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
I’m gonna make a ruling based on
the agreed upon facts, and anyone
who does not like it, can opt for a
public trial. Any takers?
No one moves, but the air is suddenly charged with doubt.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
I accept the State’s recommendation
with a few qualifiers. Everyone
pleads guilty; – probation for 12
months for both of you.
The Judge glares at Jane.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
I don’t know why they want to save
you. But, you pop in front of me
again and I will tee you up and
drive you to big girl jail myself.
I hate what you have done here. If
you misbehave in my city again, no
one can save you.
Jane looks stunned, as Decker puts his hand on her shoulder.
DICK
Your honor?
The Judge tosses an icy stare at Carl and Dick.
JUDGE
I don’t like your client’s lies
anymore than the rest of this.
Tell him to shut up.
CARL shuts up for Dick.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
Now, my ruling is as follows.
The Judge points at Dick.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
You get 12 months probation; record
to be expunged, if you don’t get
stupid again. For your
consumption, in love or not, taking
the heat for her is STUPID.
The Judge swings toward Jane.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
You get 28 days in alcohol
treatment. You finish it and I
will expunge your record too.
Don’t think I will ever forget the
strings you pulled.
JANE
Your honor?
JUDGE
What!
Jane stands, polite and contrite.
JANE
I have an, unique situation. A
charge for public intoxication is a
problem.
JUDGE
I know your entire situation. What
you have is a conviction that can
be erased. The treatment has
already been arranged at your own
clinic and will appear to be part
of your employment. This was
arranged by your personal string
section.
Jane sits, Decker relaxes. The Judge speaks to his intercom.
JUDGE (CONT’D)
Betty, let’s get this part on
record.

They’re both very lucky. It appears that Miss. Jane has had a history with the judge, eh? Nice going with the court scene. You are so nice to them. I would have given Missy there much more punishment. And for that hubby of hers, hope he learns some lesson from all of these? Hehe. Sorry, you got me so involved with your characters that I’m making these kinds of remarks. Lol.
Be patiently waiting for the next posting.

T.L.,
I went back to read all your replies to my comments and have enjoyed reading them. Thank you. I must point out that you missed my comment in #11. I left you a good one there.
I wish more people will discover your own writing because it’s very good. I guess everybody is just busy checking your weekly contests and not even gandering in your blog while they ‘re here. I did exactly that before until I came back later to really check out your blog that I discovered your Screenplay in progress.
Have a great weekend.
