Intervention - Scene 22

INT. TREATMENT FACILITY MAIN ROOM — MORNING

Jane is escorted into the main treatment office, which has
seen its share of pain and puke.  The desk is a huge barrier
to protect those behind it.  The chairs are barely above
prison safe and the wall decorations are a mix of drug and
alcohol propaganda and daily treatment tools.

The treatment director sits behind the desk; in charge, but
looking confused about how to handle this problem.  Jane
asserts control with the very act of walking.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Welcome.  Have a seat.

Jane continues to stand and surveys the room and the lead
               counselor with a reproachful eye.

                                   JANE
You have a bit of a problem here.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Clients have problems.  I have
                         solutions.

Jane moves forward and sits on the edge of the desk, picking
up things and moving them around to suit her fancy.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR (CONT’D)
I know where they go after you
                         leave.

Jane picks up a pack of cigarettes and holds it with longing
and disdain.  Jane drops them in the trash can.

                                   JANE
Nasty habit; I quit on my wedding
                         day.  Why haven’t you quit?

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
People need to smoke here.  Without
it, there would be mass revolt.

                                   JANE
I didn’t ask why THEY get to smoke.
I asked why YOU can’t quit.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
You don’t get to ask until you’re
on this side of the desk.

                                   JANE
                         That day will come.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
Not in the next twenty eight days.

Jane reaches into the trash and takes the cigarette pack out
and tosses it on the desk in front of the lead counselor.

                                   JANE
                         Need one now?

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Do you?

                                   JANE
                         I never need, I choose.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Like in driving the car?

                                   JANE
My husband drove, I just drank.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Right.

Jane takes a cigarette and slowly brings it to her mouth.

The lead takes a cigarette out; opens her desk drawer and
gets a box of matches.  She lights her cigarette first.  She
then offers it over to Jane, who lets it burn down before
leaning over to accept the light.

                                   JANE
                         I prefer a lighter.

Jane lets the cigarette start burning, skips her drag and
puts it out in the ashtray; stranding the lead in the middle
               of her second puff.

                                   JANE (CONT’D)
                         As I said, I have a solution.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Clients don’t make treatment terms.

                                   JANE
We will tell everyone that I am not
court ordered, I am just the new
                         boss immersing in the system.
                         Learning through experiencing.

Jane moves more things on the desk.

                                   JANE (CONT’D)
                         I’ll be just like a client.  I’ll
do the work, but we will have a
                         pretense that protects me publicly.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
I read the court order.  It isn’t
                         your plan.

                                   JANE
There’s something in it for you.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Go on.

                                   JANE
                         Written job security.

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
I already have a copy of the court
order in my files.  I’m secure.
                         Your sponsor will know too.

                                   JANE
                         Who will that be?

                                   LEAD COUNSELOR
                         Alex.

  1. Wow! Even in treatment, she’s still as manipulating as ever. I’m glad I’m not the counselor. I’m grating my teeth as I read this post. I think she’s hopeless.
