INT. DICK AND JANE'S ENTRANCE -- MOMENTS LATER

                                   JANE
The sign is silly, but thanks.

                                   DICK
                         What's with the girl?

                                   JANE
You met her at the treatment
                         center. Right? She's going to
                         be helping me now.

Jane smiles a coy self-satisfied smile, even as she goes
over more of the house, making small adjustments to flowers
and straightening chairs that are in perfect alignment.

                                   JANE (CONT'D)
Did you smoke while I was away?

                                   DICK
                         Of course not.

                                   JANE
I just thought, with all the
smoking they did in the family
                         meetings, that you wouldn't be
strong enough to keep your vow.

                                   DICK
                         I don't smoke anymore.

                                   JANE
                         Carl smokes, doesn't he?

Dick looks furtively around the room to find any leftover
evidence. Jane examines ashes in the fire place.

                                   DICK
                         Carl didn't smoke in here.

                                   JANE
From now on we will have to be
                         extra vigilant.

INT. UPSTAIRS MASTER BATH -- EARLY EVENING SAME DAY

Dick reaches into a secret cubby and pulls out cigarettes.
He moves to the toilet and rejects that as a hiding place.

               Jane's footsteps coming upstairs.

Dick panics. He reaches into trash, emptying it so he can
stash the pack in the trash before Jane comes in.

He finds a box below tissues and opens it. He starts to
push the pack in the box.

The steps are closer to the door.

He drops the box and puts the tissues back over the box.

The lettering on the box, HOME PREGNANCY TEST finally
registers, just as the tissues drop into the basket.

The door swings open and Jane towers over Dick.

                                   JANE
                         What are you doing?

                                   DICK
I was, I just knocked it over and
                         some tissues fell out.

                                   JANE
Hurry and pick it up, no-one will
                         be coming in here.

Dick picks up the trash can and turns to the door.

                                   DICK
I'll empty this and finish down
                         stairs.

EXT. BY THE BIG TRASH CAN BY THE GARAGE -- EVENING

Dick empties the trash and finds the test kit. He pulls
the cigarettes out of the box and pushes them below the
               trash.

He takes the box out and looks at the test stick.
POSITIVE. Jane sees him from the window and smiles slyly.

  1. Is that Jane’s pregnancy test result? Hmm… I wonder who’s the father. Dick or the Senator? I wonder what Jane’s up to now?

  3. Hi Avid,
It’s easy to do. I’ve done it in my own novel blog. Others just pointed them out to me as well.
Anyway, I noticed that the comment section is back in post 27 now. I hope you got to read my comment for #27, which I sent to your e-mail address.

You’re welcome to my blog, by the way.

  4. Yeah, It is absolutely Perfect! Interventions are either direct, typically involving a confrontative meeting with the alcohol or other drug dependent person (the most typical type of intervention) or indirect, involving work with a co-dependent family to encourage them to be more effective in helping the addicted individual. Great post i look forward to reading more.
