JANE
MY BABY, MY BABY, MY BABY.

Two cops rush past Sara’s room’s open door.

INT. MASTER BED ROOM — MOMENTS LATER

Guns drawn, cops burst into the bathroom. Dick holds Sara
closely. The cop tries to control the situation.

INT. DICK AND JANE’S HOUSE – STAIRS — MOMENTS LATER

Jane runs upstairs, with the phone in hand.

OPERATOR

Please state the nature of your emergency.

JANE
Stop hurting us.

INT. LIVING ROOM WHERE THE BAR IS — MOMENTS LATER

Dick is pouring his own first scotch and takes a hit.

JANE
Dick…honey…can you forgive
me?

DICK
You’re forgiven, but I’m still a
bit disappointed about the guys
you have been boning. I feel bad
for them.

INT. ALEX’S CAR — MOMENTS LATER

She is talking to the lead counselor on the phone.

ALEX
I need to talk to you about Jane.
You’re the one who made me her
sponsor and I think that makes
this your problem too. I just
need you to know, sort of
covering my ass; I don’t trust
that bitch as far as I can throw
her. I might need your help
later. After all, what good is a
sponsor, if she won’t help a girl
hide the body?

INT. ALEX’S APT — LATER

Alex rests in a ratty studio apartment. Of the few things
in the room, only one book box is empty. The books sit on
a makeshift bookshelf. The titles are a who’s who of
social and personal dysfunction. She holds an open beer
and smiles.

ALEX
(to the beer can)
Like drinking is my biggest
problem: ice cream, maybe; men,
yep; hiding from the IRA, harder,
that crazy bitch Jane, for
sure… drinking. That’s more
like salvation.

INT. DICK AND JANE’S BED ROOM — LATER

Dick plays with Sara but keeping a wary eye on Jane.

INT. SARA’S BEDROOM DOOR HALLWAY DICK AND JANE’S — LATER

Dick closes the door softly enough to keep a baby asleep
and whispers to the closed door.

DICK
Love you Saratoes. No matter
what.

EXT. THE YARD PARTY — MOMENTS LATER

Jane passes Alex and gets her attention.

JANE
I just saw Dick, he seems pissed,
did something happen?

ALEX
Not that I saw.

Jane heads for the Senator with a mile wide smile.

The glass in Dick’s hand is sweating, as he spots Jane and
heads toward her and the Senator.

               EXT. DICK AND JANE'S DRIVE WAY -- MOMENTS LATER

               The black car of the Senator pulls into the drive.

               INT. DICK AND JANE'S KITCHEN -- MOMENTS LATER

               Jane is distracted.  She spots Dick at the door. 

                                   JANE
                         Come on Baby, faster, harder.

EXT. DICK AND JANE’S BACK YARD — AFTERNOON

JANE
Carl, that drink need to be
refreshed?

CARL
You know I like fresh.

Carl wanders over to Dick who is at the grill. Dick looks
over at Jane and gets her attention. He looks at his watch
and pretends to hold a fork and eat. Jane shakes her head
no and looks at the parking lot again.

Dick takes a burger to Susan, who openly flirts.

Jane moves past Carl with a sneer.

JANE
Guess Dick will take care of
Susan.

EXT. DICK AND JANE’S BACK YARD — AFTERNOON

Jane walks over to Susan and, with her eyes on the
driveway, Jane sits for a moment.

JANE
Sue, you are putting those back
pretty fast and the Abbots are
pretty new to recovery; are you
ok?

EXT. DICK AND JANE’S BACK YARD — AFTERNOON

The party looks like the minions of Martha Stewart have
swarmed over the place. An afternoon’s BBQ has been
converted into career enhancement for Jane.

Carl loiters around the big silver gas Weber, watching the
women and the level of scotch in his tumbler.

     INT. DICK'S OFFICE -- DAY

     The office is large, extremely organized, filled with
     electronics and a large work desk, overflowing with files.
     Multiple computer screens flash with data and drawings.
     Dick and Carl's sleeves are rolled up.

INT. JANE’S OFFICE — DAY

Renovations are extensive bang along outside the office
window.

JANE
I need help, Sara needs you too.
He has started to get physical.

INT. BABY BARE STRIP JOINT — AFTERNOON

Carl leers about the room, his beer is half full and Dick’s
still has a full head of foam.

Dick nervously spins the glass on the table and refuses the
normal course of business in the Bar. The girls buzz
around the tables. Dick is showing a picture of Sara to
Carl like it is the first time.

INT. TREATMENT FACILITY JANE’S NEW OFFICE — DAY

Jane sits at her beautiful wooden desk, as Alex is escorted
in. Jane casually reads a file, forcing Alex to wait.
Alex seethes. Alex moves some signs off the chair. She
turns them over and they read “NO SMOKING”.

JANE
Federal witness protection
program. That’s something
different.

EXT. STARBUCKS COFFEE SHOP — MORNING

Dick is carrying a two year old girl on his hip like he has
been doing it a thousand years. Joy radiates from his
face, as he sweeps into the store. Everyone greets him.
SARA, his favorite person and daughter, giggles in his
arms.

INT. DICK AND JANE’S BED ROOM — NIGHT

Dick and Jane move about the room in a routine. Dick is
drunk and Jane carries a big tumbler of dark liquid.

Dick frowns, walks to Jane, takes her drink and tests it.

DICK
It’s coke. You going to tell
them?

                                   DEMENTED WOMAN
                         You did it for your Daddy.

               Alex just sits in stunned silence.

                                   DEMENTED WOMAN (CONT'D)
                         See, you need to talk.

      INT. TREATMENT CENTER DAY ROOM - DAY

 The Demented Woman who talks to cigarettes, strides
 purposefully up to Alex, who is staring out the window and
 writing notes in a personal journal.  Alex sees her coming
 and quickly closes the journal and clicks the cover's lock
 closed.

INT. DICK AND JANE’S PARTY — LATER

The crowd mixes and mingles. Cokes at one table, alcohol
at another. A rich patron has a burning cigarette. There
are no ashtrays, he puts the butt out in his glass. Jane
graciously takes the glass and brings him another.

INT. DICK AND JANE’S ENTRANCE — MOMENTS LATER

JANE
The sign is silly, but thanks.

DICK
What’s with the girl?

JANE
You met her at the treatment
center. Right? She’s going to
be helping me now.

EXT. GOLF COURSE — DAY

Dick and Carl are on the course, drinking more than playing.

DICK
Day 23, who knew 28 would go by so
fast.

INT. TREATMENT FACILITY MAIN ROOM — AFTERNOON

The patients mill about the main room in various states of
mental focus. The room feels dangerous.

Jane speaks, the lead counselor watches. Alex scowls from
the back of the room. Patients look to Alex for clues.

INT. MAIN TREATMENT AREA — MOMENTS LATER

               Jane and the Lead walk to the main treatment area.  A woman
               sits in the corner.  As Jane approaches, the woman’s head
               turns.  It is Alex the server girl.

INT. TREATMENT FACILITY MAIN ROOM — MORNING

               Jane is escorted into the main treatment office, which has
               seen its share of pain and puke.  The desk is a huge barrier
               to protect those behind it.  The chairs are barely above
               prison safe and the wall decorations are a mix of drug and
               alcohol propaganda and daily treatment tools.

               INT. "BABY BARE" STRIP BAR — AFTERNOON

               Dick and Carl walk in.  A neon light, "BABY BARE" glows over
               a worn but cared for bar.  This is not a gentleman’s club.
               Neon lights, smoke, bottles of beer and breasts abound.  

                                   DANCING GIRL

               INT. DICK AND JANE BEDROOM AT HOME — THAT SAME NIGHT

               Jane leads Dick into the bedroom, she’s wearing the same
               clothes she was wearing with the Senator.  She begins to
               undress.

                                   JANE
                         Talk to me while I shower.

INT. SENATOR’S HOME OFFICE — DAY

The office exudes power. The Senator reclines with a scotch.
He hands one to Jane. She moves close.

SENATOR STEWART
When does treatment start?

JANE
Next week. Alan, I wanted to
say…

INT. COURTROOM — DAY

               Dick and Carl, Jane and Decker, ADA Johnson and the Judge are
               all arranged in the Judge’s office.  The Judge is out of his
               robe.  The Judge surveys the players sternly.

                                   JUDGE
                         Someone got me off the golf course.

ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY JOHNSON shakes hands with Decker.

GRIFFIN DECKER
Tim, nice to see you again.

ADA JOHNSON
Wheels are turning, as we speak.

INT. SECOND INTERROGATION ROOM — MOMENTS LATER

               Jane sits with Decker across the table.

                                   JANE
                         Alan sent you?

                                   GRIFFIN DECKER
                         The wheels are rolling in the
                         prosecutor’s office, as we speak.

 INT. POLICE STATION INTERROGATION ROOM — NEXT MORNING

               Dick and Jane sit.  The morning Sun shows Jane more widely

               awake and Dick looking resolute, beaten and pissed.

              INT. CAR IN USED CAR LOT — MOMENTS LATER

                                   DICK
                         Stop the car.  Trade me places.

                INT. CAR — RACING THROUGH DOWN TOWN — MOMENTS LATER

                                   JANE
                         Buckle up.

               Dick fearfully fumbles with his seat belt.

               EXT. — CAR RACING DOWN THE STREET — MOMENTS LATER

 INT. NEW BLACK BMW — NIGHT

               Jane’s head lulls back and she closes her eyes.  Dick
               tentatively reaches for the keys.  Closer…closer until his
               crushed fingers touch the key.  Jane snaps awake.

EXT. OUTSIDE SENATORS DOOR — NIGHT
               Dick is trying to help Jane down the steps.  Jane resists and
               breaks free and pin balls off a topiary and into a tree, gets
               her bearings, brushes off Dick’s help and forces her hand
               into his jacket pocket.  She pulls out the car keys.

 
INT. INSIDE SENATORS HOUSE — LATER
               Dick searches for Jane, spots her with the Senator in a dark
               room.  They are close and whispering.  Dick approaches.
                                   JANE
                         Dickie, where have you been?  Alan
                         and I were just discussing turning
                         the center into a federal program.
                         We talked about your business too.   

EXT. NEAR CORNER OF THE HOUSE — MOMENTS LATER
               A server passes Dick and he stops dead in his tracks.  He
               follows her to the back of the building.  She is a few years
               younger than Dick.  She is pretty with a hard edge.
                                   DICK
                         Can I bum one?
                                   SERVING GIRL
                         Forgot ‘em, or sneaking [...]

 
               EXT. AT PARTY — EVENING
               Dick and Jane exit the car.  Jane smiles and leads Dick to
               SENATOR ALAN STEWART.  He is as attractive as Jane and
               obviously very powerful.  He holds court by a pool.
                                   SENATOR STEWART
                         Jane, so glad you could make it.  I
                         hope it wasn’t an inconvenience.
                         Not much [...]

 INT. NEW BLACK BMW — EVENING
               Dick stares out the window of the BMW.  Dick and Jane are
               dressed in their party best.  Jane is driving aggressively.
                                   JANE
                         It’s not just for me, Dick you can
                         find new clients for your company
                         and I can connect more firmly with
                         Senator Stewart.  We can get you
                         [...]

 
               INT. LIMO JUST OUTSIDE THE RECEPTION — LATER
               Guests wave to the Limo and the sun still shines like a
               bright promise of the future.  Jane rolls up the windows
               after waving goodbye.  The interior darkens.  Dick looks
               lovingly at Jane.  The driver lusts in the mirror at Jane.

 
P.O.V. HOME VIDEO CAM AT RECEPTION — MOMENTS LATER
               A wedding guest’s video cam gets keepsake video statements of
               guests and approaches the family table.
                                   MALE AT TABLE
                         Dick, buddy, she’s the prettiest
                         girl you ever talked to, you are
                         one lucky boy.  It has to be your
                         money.

               INT. CHURCH — MORNING
               Sunlight floods through the windows onto the perfect wedding.
               Dick pulls Jane to him, she kisses him carefully.  They walk
               back down the aisle.  Dick smiles like a lottery winner and
               Jane makes eye contact with guests.

               EXT. DICK’S HOUSE – DAY
 
               Dick carries arm loads of shopping bags from Neiman Marcus
               and Nordstrom’s. Jane is dressed to kill and Dick looks more
               like a schlump than he did in the bar. He is sporting a
               hundred dollar hair cut, five hundred glasses and the dazed
               expression of a man who has endured [...]

               The sound of a wooden match struck once, Nothing.  Twice and
               a spark flashes on the screen.  Third time and a flame flares
               in slow motion, giving a glimpse of the tip of a woman’s
               cigarette.
               The flame settles to a slow burn and the match tip trembles.
               [...]

                                                               FADE IN:
               BLACK SCREEN — NIGHT
               White, sensuous tendrils of smoke drift up in random
               patterns.  The smoke starts faint and grows thicker, choking
               the screen.
                                   RICHARD
                         The blonde looks like my type.
                                   CARL
                         She’s the kind of woman you marry,
                         not someone you try to have sex
                         with.  She’s too plain looking for
