INT. TREATMENT CENTER DAY ROOM - DAY
The Demented Woman who talks to cigarettes, strides
purposefully up to Alex, who is staring out the window and
writing notes in a personal journal. Alex sees her coming
and quickly closes the journal and clicks the cover's lock
closed.
DEMENTED WOMAN
We need to talk.
ALEX
What do you need chief.
DEMENTED WOMAN
Don't call me that.
ALEX
You asked me to call you that last
week.
DEMENTED WOMAN
I'm not him anymore. I'm me
today.
ALEX
Ok.
The Demented Woman drags Alex to a unoccupied corner and
her eyes flit around the room before she focuses in on
Alex.
DEMENTED WOMAN
You need to tell me something.
ALEX
What.
DEMENTED WOMAN
You tell me.
ALEX
Tell you what?
DEMENTED WOMAN
You fretting again.
ALEX
I'm lost here honey.
DEMENTED WOMAN
Maybe you need to talk to him and
not to me.
ALEX
Him?
DEMENTED WOMAN
Your man.
ALEX
I don't have one.
DEMENTED WOMAN
I'm crazy, but not that crazy. I
saw it. In this very room.
ALEX
Ok Sweetie, what ever you say.
DEMENTED WOMAN
I know why you are afraid.
ALEX
I'm not afraid.
DEMENTED WOMAN
You have been since you got here,
waiting for them to find you.
But it's worse now. Now you have
something to lose. You need to
talk to someone. If it's not
him, it should be me.
ALEX
I really don't know what you
want.
DEMENTED WOMAN
Do you know why it's good to talk
to a crazy woman? You can tell
us anything and no one would
believe us if we told them.
ALEX
Who do you talk to?
DEMENTED WOMAN
My cigarettes.
ALEX
Why?
DEMENTED WOMAN
Cause I can tell them anything,
they listen, then I smoke em so
they can't tell anyone else.
ALEX
Good strategy, I guess.
DEMENTED WOMAN
Want to know my secret?
ALEX
Sure.
DEMENTED WOMAN
I hate to smoke. I just do it to
kill them so they can't rat me
out.
ALEX
So, your secret is you are a
killer?
DEMENTED WOMAN
Just like you.
ALEX freezes.
DEMENTED WOMAN (CONT'D)
You did it for your Daddy.
Alex just sits in stunned silence.
DEMENTED WOMAN (CONT'D)
See, you need to talk.
ALEX
Let's say I do. Can you keep a
secret?
DEMENTED WOMAN
I tell everything to my
cigarettes. I'll smoke em fast.
ALEX
I can't tell you some things.
Even if I wanted to.
DEMENTED WOMAN
You used to dream. A lot. I
know about the bombing. How your
Daddy made you do it for the
cause. I knew before the dream
though.
ALEX
You talk to cigarettes.
DEMENTED WOMAN
It's in your voice, the slight
Irish accent. It's in your eyes
too. They never lie. I see the
same look in my mirror.
Sometimes you have to kill, even
when you don't want to.
ALEX
You can't ever say that again.
They will find me and kill me.
DEMENTED WOMAN
I know, that's why I smoked the
pack that was in the room when
you had the dream.
ALEX
Thanks.
I don't understand why you wanted
to talk about this.
DEMENTED WOMAN
You had to trust me.
ALEX
So.....
DEMENTED WOMAN
So, you have to tell him.
ALEX
Tell him?
DEMENTED WOMAN
The bitch's husband. You have to
tell him you're in love with him.
ALEX
Jesus.
DEMENTED WOMAN
Ok, tell yourself first. Then
tell him. He needs to know. He
smokes too.
ALEX
That's just crazy.
DEMENTED WOMAN
Love is, isn't it?
The woman stands, takes out a cigarette from a fresh pack.
ALEX
Need a light?
The Demented woman counts the cigarettes.
DEMENTED WOMAN
Eighteen to go before tonight.
